American University of Barbados – White Coat Ceremony –September 28th, Barbados

The American University of Barbados, a prominent and leading Medical School in Wildey, Barbados had their Annual White Coat Ceremony and Annual Academic Awards Ceremony on September 28th, at their Wildey, campus.

The ceremony was graced by many distinguished guests like Mr. Dwight Sutherland, (Minister, Ministry of Small Business, Entrepreneurship and Commerce, Barbados), Mr. Wilfrid Abrams – (Acting Health Minister, Barbados), Senator-Dr. Romel Springer, (Parliamentary Secretary Ministry of Education), Ms.AlitiaQuintynefrom BAC (Barbados Accreditation Council) amongst a host of other renowned people of Barbados.

The event was attended by over 250 attendees, comprising of students, award winners, guests, parents, and almost 100 White Coat earning students.

Dr Syed Kazmi, Dean of the American University of Barbados, gave the welcome address, giving an overview of the University’s Vison and growth till date, under the aegis of it’s parent Medical Institution, Era Medical College( ranked among the top 10 private medical schools in India), from where AUB inherits the latest Teaching pedagogy of 3D Animation and Gaming Technology usage in teaching medicine, one of the first of it’s kind in the world.

Dr Sam K Suhail, Dean of USA Clinical Studies, spoke about AUB’s USA Clinical Rotation phase of the Program,followed by speeches by the distinguished guests.

Mr. Dwight Sutherland –Minister of Small Business, Entrepreneurshipand Commerce, greeted and congratulated the American University of Barbados for achieving so much in such a short time, especially achieving all accreditations like the CAAM HP accreditation, BAC (Barbados Accreditation Council) Recognition and all its International academic listings.

Senator Dr. Romel Springer, from the Ministry of Education shared some anecdotes as case study stories for the students and motivated the University management and students to progress at its current pace.

The Awards ceremony commenced after this and was followed by the main event –The White Coat Ceremony for almost 100 students graduating into the MD stage of their medicine program. AUB Dean, Dr Kazmi, gave the White Coats to the students, followed by The Hippocratic Oath taking session.

Honorable Mr Wifrid Adams (Acting Health Minister, Barbados), gave a high intensity motivating speech after the conclusion of the White Coat Ceremony emphasizing on humility and humane characteristics each budding Doctor must have towards their fellow colleagues and patients. “I’m touched to see tears in the eyes of some of you while taking the Oath” he said, “as that shows how passionate you will be towards your profession.”

The Ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks from the Dean, Dr. Kazmi and the AUB Faculty and team.
